SBS Chill on CD (and up for grabs)

SBS Chill's new double CD compilation - smoooooth
I love writing. And love my job. But it's made even sweeter when I have some good tunes to listen to which don't interfere with the mechanical workings of my brain. For this, I like something uber chilled and uninterrupted without always relying on my own music - which I often, inevitably, end up singing or apartment dancing to, thus breaking wordy concentration.

In the past, when I've had the TV on and been too lazy to get to the stereo, I've just switched over to the radio channels for background noise. This is how I first discovered SBS Chill and how perfect it is for workaholic night owls tapping away at the crazy hours.

Streaming 24/7, you can now get SBS Chill on digital radio, online, and through iTunes using their new app. Sourced from all around the world, I love that Chill offers a blend of relaxing tunes that let you escape the hustle and bustle for a while and focus on what's going on just with you.

SBS Chill have just released their first double CD, curated by Rob Miller and Christophe Mallet, with tracks from the likes of The Future Sounds of London, Salif Keita, home grown Sarah Blasko, The Polyphonic Spree and Pepe Deluxe. I've been blissfully listening to it for most of this week and love, every time, that it ends with Chemical Brothers' Dream On. Ahhh - so nice.

You can buy the CD or digital download online - OR you could just win one for yourself. I have a copy of the double CD to give away this week, just comment below with what music you love to chill to. Easy peasy. Winner will be selected based on responses and what I say goes ;)

Sublimely yours,

Little Miss Melbourne xoxo

Kasia Dietz Handbags

With Paris on my mind a lot lately (more than usual), I’ve been thinking about last year’s trip when I was lucky enough to meet some fabulous new people who I now call friends.  One of these people is graceful New Yorker-turned-Parisian, Kasia Dietz.  Many expats and design-focused Francophiles are familiar with and fond of Kasia’s bag designs, myself included.  It helps that she is one of those genuine, warm people you meet who radiates positive energy.  Kasia’s story in Paris is one that we might consider “living the dream” – it involves falling in love, moving to the city of lights and making her designing dreams a reality.  With her bags are now retailing in Europe, America and online, it's a story of growing success.  Here it is:

LMM: How did you end up in Paris all the way from New York City?
KD: My path to Paris began on Prince Street in New York City on an unsuspecting Spring evening. This is where I met my handsome Italian who months later I followed to the city of lights. Once in Paris I thought what better place to realise my dreams of designing wearable art in the form of handbags, surrounded and inspired by so much fashion and art.

LMM: Sounds divine.  What do you love so much about bags and accessories?
KD: Accessories are the perfect complement to any ensemble, while adding a personal touch. Bags in particular are both fashionable and functional, a necessity whether running around town or traveling around the world.

LMM: What keeps you interested and motivated?
KD: Much like a relationship, a business takes time to grow and evolve. Watching my handbags make their way into and around the world, as my brand continues to grow, is fascinating and empowering.

LMM: And where do you find inspiration for your designs?
KD: My handbags are pieces of myself, reflecting places I've been, cities I love, chapters of my life. I design out of love for that which I see and the world around me, while keeping a woman's needs in mind. My passion for designing is much like a love affair that continues to grow.

LMM: What’s the next chapter in the story of Kasia Dietz?
I’m currently working on a collection of limited edition clutches inspired by my recent travels to Istanbul. The fabrics are gorgeous!  I’m also designing more Pop Art bags to add to the collection since they have been so in demand!

Find the designs and collections at www.kasiadietz.com

If you’re heading to Paris in the near future and feeling creative, Kasia also runs bag design workshops at Sugar Daze Bake Shop and Chez Moi in Paris – it’s fun and the cupcakes are delicious.

Bisous!

Summer of Prosecco Pop Up: bubbles and beach in the city

If it looks like Prosecco is my new favourite pass time, well that might be just about right.  While I’ve always been a fan of bubbles in general (I think it’s hereditary), I’m loving the clean, crisp, easy to drink nature of good quality Prosecco (like that of the King Valley) for the summer.

With Melbourne set to do its standard ‘winter one day, summer the next’ thing this weekend, Brown Brothers is keeping things smooth as white sand with a free-entry Summer of Prosecco Pop-Up Event in Richmond.

A touch of beach glamour brought to our inner city Melbourne, the tucked away, sand-laden, progressive party will be pouring Prosecco, cranking the tunes and serving bite sized fish and chips from tonight through to Saturday evening.

For a twist on summer in the city, get your best beachside glam-wear on, a pair of flats or wedges, and head to the Brown Brothers Summer of Prosecco Pop Up

Francophiles unite for So Frenchy So Chic

Each year, I travel over to France for my annual dose of creative inspiration, cultural impression and
a good dose of networking.  I usually love going in the cooler months of February or March when the air is still crisp without being unbearably cold for une petite dame.  This year, however, I'm going to be tied up in February and wont be traveling til later in the year.  Sad face.  Fortunately, Renault have come to the rescue and have offered to actually chauffeur and host me as guest to this weekend's So Frenchy So Chic at Werribee Park.  OUI!  The perfect Francophile reprieve!

The French music festival has been going strong for 10 years, although this year will be a first for me.  I'm very much looking forward to kicking back to the finest in French music, food and wine brought to us by Renault and Cartel Music.  On the food front, browse and savour French inspired goodness from the gourmet food stalls or BYO - but leave the alcohol at home; So Frenchy is a fully licensed event (with all the bubbles you can wish for!).  Before you go, check out the music and artists which will be appearing, here. You may also want to enter the competition to win a road trip around France with two return air fares, Renault car hire and 10 night's accommodation...swoon.

So Frenchy So Chic is a family friendly event.  Les enfants under 12 are welcome for free with lots of kids activities to keep them entertained while you soak up the atmosphere.  Gates open at 12 and the event will go til around 8pm.

Get your Francophile on and come down for a day celebrating the French lifestyle in sheer effortless chic.  Fabuleux!

A letter to 2013

Dear 2013,

I just wanted to say thanks.  I'll be honest, you were a bit of toughie.  But I've been thinking about you a lot in the last few days and I realised just how much you brought into my life.  Along with new friends, new adventures and new experiences, you also brought me beautiful love, if only for a short time.

You brought me mental, physical and emotional challenges - some of which I've never experienced before.  But they each helped me learn a great deal more about myself, and more about other people.  In fact, you've helped me grow a lot in the last 12 months - and for that, I am grateful.

You've paved the way for some rather fabulous goals for your incumbent which I am incredibly excited about.  2014 has a lot to live up to, and I have faith that it will deliver.

But now it's time for you and I to say goodbye.  You will always be a part of me.  I will remember you forever.  And I will cheers in your honour tonight with delectable champagne whilst surrounded by great people and having a wonderful time.

Farewell 2013.

Bisous

Nobu Melbourne's A Taste of Peru

Traditional Peruvian Pisco Sour
I love a good thirsty Thursday and now stylish Nobu Melbourne is bringing it to us every week with A Taste of Peru – a fusion of South American flavours with Japanese techniques and some damn fine cocktails.  This week I had the pleasure of sampling the menu so I could share the good stuff with you.  What more could a girl ask for in the days leading up to Christmas?

Rosa Valha - "romantic and sexy blend"
Machu Pichu Smash! Fave.

The cocktails were energetic, fresh and unique with a good balance of tasty flavours and consistencies.  Averaging around $22 a cocktail, I thought this was very reasonable considering the venue (of which I am a new fan, being a previous Nobu Melbourne virgin).  Hands down, my favourite was the Machu Pichu Smash with Brazilian Sagatiba Pura Cachaça, Elderflower Cordial, Lemon Juice and fresh apples.  It’s also fun to say.

The tapas, share style menu offers tasty numbers like grilled scallops with aji amarilo salsa, king crab ceviche on butter lettuce and 48 hour cooked short ribs.  SO GOOD.  Slightly limited on the vegetarian front if you’re that way inclined but I have no doubt they will be able to happily accommodate your every need.

Homage to his earlier chef days in Peru, Executive Chef Christopher Shane brings us A Taste of Peru every Thursday night from 5pm at Nobu Melbourne.

You’ll like it if you enjoy casual sophisticated with good food, drink and music.  Check out the menu here.

I’m already planning for more scallops and Machi Pichu right after Christmas…hello holidays!

Have you suffered hormonal amnesia?

I was chatting with a dear friend today who was feeling a little, well, anti-world.  That's ok; it happens.  But she explained that she couldn't quite understand how yesterday she could have easily married the world, where as today she wanted to shoot it.  Without her telling me any more of the story, I knew exactly what was happening.  Hormonal amnesia.

It seems to happen to almost every woman I know, myself included.  Complete and utter bewilderment when all of a sudden our clothes feel as if they don't fit, we are easily distracted or pissed off with the world, we could eat the gross domestic product of a small country - per meal - and everything seems to tick us off, all within a concentrated space of time for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON.  Grrr!

Of course, it's not too much later that we experience a divine penny-dropping moment and realise that we are just due to be slightly hormonal that week.  Or some poor suffering soul has reminded us why we suddenly have a personal vendetta against, well, everything.  The husband of another friend of mine is divinely patient with his gorgeous wife reminding her almost every time why she feels so strangely, abnormally tired from time to time.  Hormonal amnesia, my friends.

#giggle
This is where I should mention that men (or women) should never - ever - suggest that a woman is in a bad mood thanks to her hormones.  There is no license or negotiation around this.  It's just sheer idiocy.

But I digress.

As a woman, the concept of hormonal amnesia seriously makes me chuckle.  It's not like we are new to the idea yet almost everytime can't help but wonder what the hell is going on.  How is it that we
forget all the personal symptoms over just a small period of time (scuse the pun)?

One potential positive to all this is that maybe it's a sign of us simply enjoying and being distracted by life - and that we can recognise when something's up.  Or due.  Either or.  If one thing's for sure, we will probably forget again.

Yours,

Little Miss Melbourne xoxo

Be careful what you wish for

Don't look so smug, genie

I recently had the somewhat unfortunate experience of falling down a flight of stairs and dislocating and internally bruising my ribs.  For any kind of damaged ribs, the treatment is much the same; rest, and lots of it.  Equally unfortunate is my aversion to this requirement for resting.  Like most of us, I love being on the go and cramming each and every day with an equal balance of work and play.  In fact, just about the only thing that makes me stop and do nothing for a while is illness, or falling down a flight of stairs.

With all this spare 'resting' time on my hands (thank Dionysus I can still write), and as someone who believes everything happens for a reason, I've been trying to learn the lesson.  And I realised that in the lead up to my little leap of faith that would end so poorly, I had begun to stretch myself too thin.  Travel, events, running a business, insomnia, new projects, and a love of fitness combined were taking their toll, and I'd started saying to myself that it was all getting too much.  That life needed to slow down.

Well.  For believers in the law of attraction you'd say that I had it coming - so the joke's on me.  But it has come at a good time, if there's such a thing for falling down stairs.  Along with the lessons learnt, it's allowed me to focus on my business and its imminent brand refresh, be ready for silly season which has kicked in with work, and - most importantly - refreshed my appreciation and gratitude for choosing to get down time plus being healthy and active (oh yoga, how I miss thee!).

So as much as I complain that all this resting is incredibly boring (FOMO has reached new heights...) this is the down time that not only I wished for, but that I actually need.  For at least the next three weeks.  Sigh.

If you're interested in writing about anything for Little Miss Melbourne, as the lovely Abbey Luckhurst did recently at Jessica Mauboy in concert, get in touch.  In the mean time, look after yourself and be careful what you wish for...

Yours,

Little Miss Melbourne xoxo

NESCAFE celebrates 75 years with Jess Mauboy (my new best friend)

Abbey Luckhurst for Little Miss Melbourne xoxo

You could say that my love of music began right at the very start - when my music loving parents named me after The Beatles album, Abbey Road.  Since then I have developed a great love of music and a fascination with singers from all genres.

Now, it is no secret that I have a deep love for all things pop and soul… so you can imagine  my excitement when on a cold winters day (read: Melbourne) I got to sit back, sip a Nescafe, and watch the gorgeous and amazingly talented Jess Mauboy play an intimate acoustic set.

Australia has followed Jess’s music journey since Australian Idol. For me, I remember that the first time I heard Jess’ voice I felt tingles all the way down my spine. This girl could belt out an amazing tune!  She had it.  **Insert epic girl crush**.

As I sat on my bean bag surrounded by the intoxicating aroma of coffee, I looked at the faces in the crowd. We were all of different ages and backgrounds, yet everyone’s expressions mirrored one another. A look that was a mix of excitement, happiness and ”thank god for the Nescafe”. How lucky were we to be invited as VIP NESCAFE winners to this exciting event in celebration of their global 75 year anniversary?!

The event began with a heartfelt welcome message from the Nescafe team on their important birthday, and then there she was.  Oh be still my beating heart!  The one and only…Jess Mauboy!  In that moment, my relationship with Jess transitioned from mere girl crush to full best friend status (well in my world anyway).  We spent the next hour listening to that incredible voice.  She sang songs from the very beginning of her career, to her latest releases. She also performed covers of songs that were of significance to her: ‘Sugarpie Honeybunch’ - an ode to her mum who loved the song but couldn’t sing it and ‘Land of a 1000 Dances’.  I love that song!!  Suffice to say I, and the rest of the crowd, got our groove on!  Through this once in a lifetime event I had a front row seat into the personal life of Jessica Hilda Mauboy as we has the chance to ask her questions in an exclusive, intimate interview.

The youngest of 5 girls, Jess fell into her love of Mariah Carey through the idolisation of one of her sisters.  Jess told us about how she would run home from school and break into her sister’s room so she could have a moment to sing and dance around to Mariah.  In this story I experienced flashbacks to a time when I held frequent Mariah tribute concerts in our lounge room.  My stage: Mums coffee table; my microphone: the TV remote and my audience: whoever I could drag onto the couch!  She spoke of how her parents love of music, especially her Mums, is what opened her eyes to the world of lyrics. Singing songs such as ‘Walk right in sit right down’ when growing up, you could only imagine how much fun it would have been to grow up in the Mauboy household – which she proudly tells us was famous for being the loudest house on the street.

Our new found friendship was cemented when she broke into song when answering questions about her favourite songs.  In ending a particularly moving song, she exclaims “Oh my god we totally just had a Glee moment!” and started laughing.  The crowd joined in with her highly infectious laugh and we all sat there like old friends enjoying each others company.
As Jess waved goodbye I sat in my beanbag for a moment to take it all in. I was in absolute awe at what this strong, determined, beautiful woman had achieved.
Jessica Hilda Mauboy and I will be friends forever (which she is yet to be informed about… minor detail…) after that day.  I hope that some day soon Jess and I can sit down over some Nescafe and reminisce about our “Glee moment”.

If you are yet to grab a copy of Jess Mauboys latest album do yourself a favour and put it on the top of your to do list. Titled ‘Beautiful’ the songs are just amazing and bring a variety of genres together. Bit of pop, funk and soul. What more could you ask for?

Tonight is Jess’s last acoustic NESCAFE session in Brisbane but her tour ‘End of the Earth’ continues through November and January – check it out and make sure you get your vocal chords ready for an epic sing-a-long.

Congratulations and thank you NESCAFE!

Night Noodle Markets in Melbourne for Good Food Month

While I was in Sydney for some biz talk last month, I visited the Night Noodle Markets being held as part of the Sydney Good Food Month.  The markets were a lot of fun and I had a great time sampling a tasty selection of Asian food from restaurants right across Sydney.

This month, and for the first time, the Night Noodle Markets are also being held in Melbourne as part of The Age Good Food Month - I'm very excited!  From the 18th to the 30th of November Alexandra Gardens will come alive with oodles of noodles plus other Asian-inspired food, pop up bars like the Rekorderlig Cider Bar, and a festival atmosphere just in time for summer.

Enjoy food from the likes of Longrain, Mamak, Wonderbao, Gelato Messina, Saigon Sally, and more.

Will Melbourne put on a better show than our northern counterparts?  Ok, it's not a competition - but I am looking forward to finding out via pork belly and apple cider on the grassy banks of the Yarra.

Alternatively, if you're after something more private and intimate, Eureka 89 is available for dining for individuals or small groups of up to 20 people.  Enjoy a menu designed by one of Melbourne's most respected Executive Chefs, Michael Hartnell, as you sit back and gaze across at the world outside.

Do-able detox with Dietlicous Cleanse

It's been a couple of weeks now since I did the Dietlicious Gluten Free Cleanse and I am still missing the delish breaky smoothies and tasty lunches and dinners.  After a period of retoxing once more (isn't that why we detox?), I take a look back at the cleanse and what I got out of it.

What is the Dietlicious Cleanse?
This is a five or ten day detox using delicious, already-prepared, delivered food supplied frozen or fresh for you to whip up with ease and convenience.  It's designed to help you revitalise, detox and lose weight with healthy, all-natural meals and is ideal for those who lead a busy, demanding life.  The menu gives your digestive system a holiday from the effects of wheat, gluten, dairy, red meat, preservatives, additives and highly processed foods.

What kind of food do you get?
I've done detox many times before using fresh, natural ingredients but it's always left me with a sense of deprivation - not to mention nearby malnutrition in some cases (the lemon detox diet springs to mind).  To get detox really working for you, it needs to be less about glorifying the distant memory of a quarter-pounder with fries, and more about empowering yourself with tasty, balanced, nutritious food.  This is exactly what the Dietlicious Cleanse offers.  The packed lunches were mostly microwaved meals (making it super easy for work) and some of the dinners required a bit of minimal cooking in the pan or oven.  You also get fruit and mixed nuts for between meals to make sure you don't think about cheating with the cookies from the kitchen at work.

Some of the meals include:
  • Provencal risotto with tuna
  • Thai red tofu curry
  • Ocean trout with vegetable ratatouille
  • Salmon chermoula with seasonal vegetables
  • Gluten free toast with hummus and tomato (breakfast)
  • Chicken cacciatore with quinoa

Microwaved?  Did that taste ok?
Yes. It was YUMMY.  The flavours in each meal were unreal and you can tell they've been prepared with care and skill by an ex michegan restaurant chef.  Nuff said.

Salmon chermoula with season veggies
The difficulty factor
As far as surviving the cleanse goes, it's very, very easy.  There's more than ample food and I'd be surprised if someone was left feeling hungry at the end of the each day or between meals.  The hardest part is simply committing every single meal over five days to the cleanse.  That being said, if you do need to cheat on the plan (I had a business lunch I needed to attend) simply opt for the healthier options of fish or chicken with salad or veg - no wheat, gluten, red meat and all the other things you're trying to give your bod a break from.

Chicken tagine with quinoa - nomtastic
What did I dig the most?
Not at any stage did I feel hungry, deprived, or as if I was actually on detox at all.  The breakfast smoothies were very tasty and as someone who doesn't make a habit of eating "the most important meal of the day" grabbing a smoothie out of the fridge was quick and easy.  I also liked how effortless the meals were, while also getting to do a bit of the cooking yourself.  Loved the addition of lemon for hot water in the morning and ginger tea for the afternoon.

GF toast with hummus, tomato and hot lemon water mmm

The worst bits?
Besides the fact you can't have coffee, wine, red meat or sugar (it IS a cleanse), dedicating each meal to the cleanse was the hardest part.

All in all
At the end of the five days I did feel revitalised, detoxified and I'd even lost a bit of weight - which utterly surprised me given how much food it felt like I was eating.  So maybe it's good for speeding up the metabolism, too.  Initially I thought it might be a bit expensive but at around $9 a meal plus the snacks, it works out to be quite good, particularly given the level of quality and how convenient the plan is.

If you're looking to kick-start a new health regime or just do a cleanse to re-boot your system, the Dietlicious Cleanse is a great option.

BUNNY The Movie (and how to win a $5,000 gold bunny)

I recently attended the premiere of Annika Glac's BUNNY at Cinema Como in South Yarra.  We were promised a movie launch 'with a twist' and they weren't lying. We enjoyed the likes of carrots made out of marzipan (I actually thought it was real until I took a bunny nibble), a dove, bunny and guinea pig weilding magician - oh and around $5,000 worth of treasure...

The masterminds behind BUNNY have launched an Australia-wide treasure hunt of an elusive gold bunny to the value of nearly $5,000.  Clues are being released throughout October to help you determine its exact whereabouts and claim the gold prize.  After it's debut in Australia, the release and treasure hunt will also take place in Poland, the US and Japan creating a global treasure hunt worth more than $20,000.

Sounds shiny and exciting - but what about the movie?

Here's the synopsis:

ALEX, fresh out of prison dreams of an uncomplicated life. Unfortunately within an hour, he’s entangled with a very pretty out of work actress, BLANKA, dressed as a BUNNY giving out pamphlets on the street. Desperate to earn some cash Alex gets the job dressed as the giant brown fox. Now they work together as the BUNNY and the FOX and their act stinks. But something bigger holds these two outsiders together, a squirmy secret that will change their lives. BUNNY charts similar territory to Michel Gondrys’, Science of Sleep and Kieslowskis’s Three Colours White.

Now, it takes a lot for a movie to impress me so it means something when I say that I really liked BUNNY.  It was warm, funny, emotional and human.  Blanka's kindness, naivety and vulnerability is in stark contrast to the history of ex-criminal Alex - and yet they seem to fit - so well.  Will the bunny that saved the fox be safe from all the bad news that he brings?  Download the movie through iTunes and find out.  I really loved it - I hope you do too.

Clues to location of the gold bunny in Australia will be released progressively on the website www.bunnythemovie.com between the 2nd of October to the 21st.

Downloaded BUNNY through iTunes Australia and New Zealand from 2.10.2013.

The universal tales of dating and love

A contact from the Twitter world recently got in touch to introduce me to her very much aligned book, Je T'aime, Me Neither - a collection of the dating misadventures of a Canadian girl in Paris experiencing the highs and lows of love, in the city that is meant to be all about just that.

After a series of emails with author April Lily Heise I am now eagerly awaiting a copy of Je T'aime, Me Neither and can't wait to curl up on the couch with a nice glass of vin rouge to take in Lily's dating stories from afar.

But as I wait for Je T'aime, Me Neither to find its way to Melbourne, it was Lily's recent blog post that struck a chord with me and resonated with my own experiences of dating and love in the last year.  In fact, our stories are almost identical.

For both Lily and I, our dating adventures were put on hold when we each met someone late last year - people not based in the same city as our own.  Love came, love almost conquered, but in the end love wasn't enough, and all that's left to do is accept the lessons learned, soothe our souls and heal our hearts, then move on, stronger and wiser than before.  As Lily was turning over a new proverbial leaf for Autumn in Paris, here in the southern hemisphere I was stepping into Spring, feeling fresh, light, and also ready for new beginnings and life.

The connection with Lily has brought to light the universal tales of dating and love that happen every day, everywhere.  There's something mildly amusing and comforting that as my story was unfolding one side of the world, so was Lily's on the other, in a similar yet respectfully different way.

It seems wherever we are, whichever season we may be passing through, we are never alone in love.

Yours,

Little Miss Melbourne xoxo

PS: I'll be telling you all about Je T'aime, Me Neither very soon. #excited.

Let the Dietlicious food cleanse begin

It's been weeks, if not months, of burning the candle at both ends and eating a lot of wax along the way.  I don't consider myself an unhealthy sort but it does seem that I have a penchant for hot chips, mid-week dinners and long lunches; mostly devoid of the fruit and veg required to qualify for the elusive 'two and five'.

When I recently sent out a tweet craving some simple, fresh vegetables, Dietlicious came to the rescue offering me their Five Day Gluten Free Cleanse to get me back on track with all the good stuff.  The food plan - which gives you breakfast, lunch and dinner with salad, fruit, nuts and seeds, for all five days - is designed to help you revitalise, detox and lose weight to re-boot your healthy-living self.  That means no wheat, no dairy, no red meat, no caffeine - no wine.

As it stands, I've needed to put off the diet for nearly a week because of plans and events prohibiting me from "eating clean". What a terrible thought (and a terrible first world problem).  But therein lies the issue with our modern day lives that so often surround convenience and events rather than doing what's best for our poor long suffering bods.  Hence why Dietlicious is here to help us get some of this balance back without having to invest the time and effort of hitting the markets every 2-3 days for fresh, GM/pesticide/additive-free food.

My Dietlicious delivery - all packed up
All the meals from Dietlicious are prepared for you by a chef with a Michelen star restaurant background and made from scratch using only seasonal, locally sourced ingredients.  You can choose either fresh or frozen meals and I've opted for frozen to help with when I could start the cleanse plan (the meals sat in my freezer for 4 days...).  Everything is delivered to you by courier and in insulated boxes to keep the good stuff nice and chilled.

Admittedly, I already know I'll have to 'cheat' on the plan on Tuesday for a booked lunch event.  I appease my guilt only with the fact that I don't eat wheat - so I'll just have to avoid any red meat, dairy, caffeine and
Today's breakfast - watermelon & acai smoothie
wine on the day too.  Damn.  BUT if it means finally shifting this cold I've had for two weeks and getting my energy levels back again with the help of fresh, natural food, bring it on.

So let the cleanse begin. There will be no pizza, cheese, duck, burgers, steak, wine or coffee for the next five days.  Instead, there'll be risotto, chicken tagine, Thai red tofu curry, ocean trout with vegetable ratatouille, salmon chermoula with seasonal vegetables - to name but a few meals.  Not so bad.  In fact, this is very different to any cleanse diet I've ever done before - and going on the risotto provencale with tuna I've had thus far, it's a great deal more tasty.  I also like the added touch of lemon for hot water in the morning and ginger tea for the afternoon.

I'll be posting my food cleanse adventures and progress on Twitter and Instagram with the hashtag #dfoodcleanse - here's to a healthy start to the week!

TEQUILA!

Now that I have your attention, I wanted to share with you a few things about our North American hombre, Mexico.  Why?  Well, not just because I love Mexican, tequila, or some of the awesome Mexican restaurants that have emerged in Melbourne, but rather because this Sunday marks Mission's Mexican Festival in Melbourne.

A celebration of Mexican Independence Day, the free festival is set to bring Federation Square alive in an array of Mexican brilliance.  As the culture that brought us the likes of tomatoes, avocados, burritos and tequila - not to mention piñatas, ponchos and sombreros - it is definitely something worth celebrating!

Last year, over 25,000 people flocked to the fiesta and this year is anticipated to be even bigger.  You can expect markets, Mexican entertainment, a kids corner for the niño pequeños, Spanish lessons, even some zumba.  You'll also be joining the tasty likes of Touche Hombre, Mamasita, Los Amates, Dos Diablos, and more.  With 15,000 tacos and more than 5,000 packets of corn chips ready at the stand-by, will they have enough?  I don't know about you, but I've never left a Mexican restaurant hungry...

I attended the official launch of Mission's Mexican Festival this week at Mad Mex in QV - there was tequila, there was DIY burrito making, there were margaritas.  Here's a snap shot of the night to get you in the mood for this weekend's Mex fiesta!

Ole!

An emotional ride at Cavalia

For us lucky little Melburnian's, Cavalia is here, in all it's glory.  I've been asked by a few people what I thought of the large scale equestrian and performing arts show and, on occasion, I've been lost for words to explain just how magical I found the night (instead using mad waving hand gestures).  I loved it.  For me, the night was an exhilarating experience and actually quite emotional at times with the sheer beauty and skill of the horses and their long haired, two legged, acrobatic counterparts.

If you haven't heard about Cavalia yet (where have you been), think Cirque du Soleil but in English and with beautiful, galloping equine.

Here are a few snaps of the show from their Social Media night a few weeks back.  Cavalia has been extended to the 15th September in Melbourne, so giddy up and get yourself down to Docklands.

You can also find a couple of videos on my Instagram profile:

Supper Safari in Melbourne: three venues, one night

Last week, I had the fortunate opportunity of experiencing The Publican Group's Supper Safari.  The name is fun and so is a night that includes cocktails, bubbly, tapas, a two course meal and wine, across three venues in Melbourne CBD.

Quack!
Tapas and bubbles
Crème Brulee
Your Supper Safari itinerary begins at Terra Rossa on Flinders Lane for a glass of sparkling and tapas.  I quite like the space at Terra Rossa, it's intimate enough where it needs to be but also suitable for a social setting and group events - like a Supper Safari.  The space is warm, cosy and comfortable.  Perfect for winter.

Two course meal with wine
Next stop is the lovely, French inspired Mr Mason on Collins Street.  A Francophile at heart, I was excited to finally head here for the first time.  Just as it should be, the French influence at Mr Mason is subtle and understated.  This part of your Supper Safari offers a two course meal (main and dessert) matched with a glass of red or white wine (French, of course).  I opted for the duck and I've been craving it ever since.  As for mashed potato with liver parfait?  Yumtastic.  They chose to steer clear of using foie gras because, let's face it, it's just plain cruel (but cruelly delicious).  My glass of Beaujolais went down a treat as did the fireplace behind our table keeping us toasty warm.  The dessert was an array of sweet treats from chocolate soufflé to lemon tart, and I didn't hear anyone complaining at all - besides how full they were.  We waddled out to head to our next stop.

Cocktails
Campari House, on our infamous Hardware Lane, is four levels of food and drink.  At your final Supper Safari stop, indulge in a specially designed cocktail in a private booth in the lounge, then choose to continue your night from there perhaps with a few more on the rooftop upstairs.

Louis Jadot Beaujolais
In transit
The three venues on the Supper Safari are a comfortable 10-15 minute walk between each so if you're partial to heels like I am, or just not up for the walk, I'd suggest a taxi or enquire about their upgrade options like limos (swanky).  There are a range of other upgrades too like pre-paid bar tabs, cheese platters, and sparkling wine in your limo.

All in all
Personally, I like a bit of variety in one night.  Supper Safari is a nice balance of this with no waiting in lines, choosing where to go on the night, or scheduling several bookings.  At $95pp it's a good idea for special events, hens parties or birthdays, or a different way to show visitors around our city with all the work done for you.

Cheers!

Turning a negative into a positive

I believe everything happens for a reason.  This includes meeting the people we meet, the people we have a relationship with, and the people we lose along the way.  I also believe that things happen just as they are meant to.  “You are right where you are meant to be, right now”, is one of my favourite remarks, especially for friends (and myself) when they need some extra reassurance in life.

Unfortunately, it can be hard to remember this when “where you are right now” seems the furthest from where you’d rather be.

A friend of mine recently and unexpectedly went separate ways with someone they loved.  As a result, and understandably, they’ve been very upset.  Unfortunately, I’ve just been through something similar.  So I know, as will you, that despite support from friends and their helpful words all you actually really want is for things to go back to being fun, awesome and happy.  Which, of course, is not how life works.  There is no rewind and pause.

You want to keep holding on to what could have been and don’t want to accept the reasons for why it wasn’t.  You forget that you weren’t actually happy with the status quo.  Or that you simply needed more of what you weren’t getting.  You forget to graciously consider the positives you got from the situation, and the positives you get from moving on.

In other words, it’s hard to see the silver lining when it’s clouded by negative thought.

However…

If things happen for a reason, and just as they are meant to, there must be something for us to take from everything we go through.  It might be a better understanding of other people, learning more about who you are, or realising that there’s something better yet to come.  A new opportunity waiting just for you to help make things fun, awesome and happy all over again.  All it takes is some rational reflection and to let things be the way they are meant to be.  Possibly also wine.  Possibly not...

For me, I had some great times, the chance to enjoy a rare connection with someone pretty awesome, and the realisation that I did a reasonably good job on the patience front (usually not my strong point).

But what will be, will be.

I am right where I am meant to be, right now.

And so are you.

Optimistically yours,

Little Miss Melbourne xoxo

The joys of being difficult

Is that bagel gluten free?
It’s not easy being green.  I’m hearing ya, Kermit.  It’s not easy being difficult, either, when asking for a decaf soy latte and a ham and cheese sandwich on gluten free bread.  Then there’s being indecisive when there are too many options on the menu plus the fact that you just want things the way you like them.  Dressing on the side, chutney with your poached eggs, and yes of course I want butter and cheese.  Yes, I am hospitality’s worst nightmare.  Needless to say, there are many renditions of “sorry for being a hassle”, always waved off by lovely wait staff offering that it’s not any trouble at all (which I am happy to ignorantly believe…).

The joys of being difficult with your order knows no bounds.  Besides the fact that you feel like a constant royal pain in the arse, you also get to pay for the privilege.  Gluten free?  Add $2.  Soy?  Add 50c.  Decaf?  Add another 50c.  The pinnacle is a café who wishes to charge you for hot water (rare but it’s been known to happen).  It seems the more ingredients we take out, the more expensive it gets.  And I understand that this is thanks to a supply demand model, but the more people I speak to the more there are opting for gluten free or decaf.

So when will the cost of being a pain ala derrière start getting a little more, erm, consumable?  Fortunately, we have come a long way as mentioned by Sarah Kempson, previously forced to take her own bread to cafes and ask for it to be toasted.  But it’s time to…get with the times, and have suppliers of such GF or decaf options offer a more realistic pricing model so the hospitality industry doesn’t have to pass this cost on to us.

Let me assure you, being difficult is not through a desire to eat smaller pieces of cakey ‘bread’ or the quirky taste that comes with decaf.  It is actually usually for a reason.  The indecisiveness of course is all home-grown and down to a bad case of FOMO and FOFE (fear of food envy).  But I guess that’s just the joys of being difficult.

Yours,

Little Miss Melbourne xoxo
