Melbourne's new Meatmaiden

Little Miss Melbourne August 22, 2014

Some find this hard to believe, but this city girl used to go camping, a lot. There was always something rustically appealing about the enamel mugs and plates we used to use out in the middle of nowhere. So when I went to Meatmother in Richmond this novelty formed part of the experience – together with the fact that I get utterly excited about meat.

But you won’t find any enamel meat trays at Meatmother’s new CBD sister restaurant, Meatmaiden.

While they’ve maintained a firm offering of mouth-watering meaty goodness and a touch of the slow cooked southern style, chef Justine Wise has also developed a pesceterian and vegetarian friendly menu (think mushroom burgers, barramundi and BBQ eggplant). With real plates, a cracking wine list (they had me at Dalzotto Prosecco) and plenty of options for different dietary requirements, dining at Meatmaiden is versatile and delicious. Even the gelato is vegan…

Housed in what used to be the hidden space of Little Hunter, Meatmaiden have added their own touch – inclusive of a chastity belt and axe – but you’ll still find the booths and elongated bar, with bar menu on offer and a touch of kitchen theatre on the agenda.

Absolute crowd pleasures are sure to be the lobster mac and cheese and southern fried chicken ribs, while my top picks were the Cajun seared tuna, grilled Mooloolaba prawns and Rangers Valley beef brisket.

But I highly recommend you track it down and try it for yourself. Open from late next week, with bookings available for groups of 8 or more.
