Gluten free choice thanks to Tyrrells Crisps

Little Miss Melbourne February 12, 2015

I read an article recently claiming that the ‘gluten free fad’ was over; that bread is back ‘in’ and that, really, coeliacs are the only ones that should be eating gluten free. Now, I beg to differ. I’m not a coeliac (I don’t think), but gluten free is a way of life for me. Bread, pasta, cake, pastry, cereals and majority of things that contain gluten seem to make me very ill very quickly, ruining not only my meal, but my day. And who wants to feel like rubbish while they try to enjoy their food? Not me. So that’s a choice I’ve stuck with for the last 11 years. This ain’t no fad.

While there are a lot of substitutions on the market for gluten-containing products, crisps – which I love – are falling way behind on the gluten free front. Yes, there are rice crackers and you can get a few brands of gluten free corn chips. But what about crisps? You know, the perfect accompaniment to wine, cheese and chats that everyone loves?!

Thankfully, an answer to this glutard crisp-loving outcry arrived when I was sent a few packs of Tyrrells hand cut crisps to sample. These are hand cooked, gluten free, MSG free, artificial ingredient free, vegan friendly chippies which, refreshingly, remind you that once upon a time these tasty morsels were actually a vegetable. In fact, the variety of potato used to make the particular crisps devoured straight out of the bag is stamped on the back of the pack. Nice touch! I also like the artwork on the front of the pack (pictured).

Tyrrells hand cooked crisps deliver on taste and crunch, sans the gut ache. I can finally enjoy yummy crisps with a glass of wine without fear of retribution. I absolutely thought this was worth sharing for others out there in the same boat.

As a British brand, they have all the quintessentially British flavours: Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar, Mature Cheddar and Chive, Sweet Chilli & Red Pepper, Lightly Sea Salted, Sunday Best Roast Chicken, and Sea Salt and Cracked Black Pepper.

My very basic motto when it comes to food is that if it makes you feel good, eat it. Tyrrells crisps fall into that category. Whether you’re a glutard, vegan, or just prefer gluten free (because we all have the right to choose), if you like rustic style chips with a good crunch and great flavour (who doesn’t) you can get Tyrrells Hand Cooked English Crisps from Coles for around $4.19 for a 150g bag.

Happy crunching!
